Cure AHC: Caring in the Far-East

Cure AHC: Caring in the Far-East

AHC Champion Patrick Christmas 13
My name is Tom Way. This is me this Christmas with my wife Darlene & our 5 year old AHC Champion Patrick.  Back in November Darlene & I planned a sponsored swim at a beach near to where we live in Java, Indonesia. Our aim was to raise money for CureAHC and our friends at AHC UK.

We garnered support from our local school, Sekolah Ciputra, which Patrick attends. Patrick was diagnosed with AHC at about 9 months old. Unfortunately the swim had to be postponed, as I had not sufficiently recovered from a motorcycle accident and two broken legs. However, the school director kindly offered to promote our efforts during an upcoming school concert.

On the night of the concert we managed to collect about 500 dollars for both CureAHC and AHC UK. We were really amazed at the generosity of parents and students. 1,000 dollars doesn’t sound a lot, but in Indonesia that is around 12 million rupiah. To put that in perspective, the tasty lunch I ate today in a restaurant cost 18 thousand rupiah – about a dollar fifty.

However, this was just the beginning. Unknown to us, the school community had taken Patrick’s story to heart. A few weeks later one of the parents asked to meet me. Mrs.Sioe Ing told me that she had continued to raise money, collecting donations from parents at the school and friends outside school. She presented us with 35 million rupiah (almost 3,000USD) to donate exclusively to CureAHC.

The story does not end there. A group of teenage girls at the school had also decided to help. Jesslyn, Rachelle, Nina and Gaby started to bake and sell cakes during break time to raise money for CureAHC.

The entire school student council (OSIS) then also jumped on board and began to sell tins of Christmas cookies. The have sold more than 80 tins to date and we are expecting donations for these to come in shortly.

My wife and I have been overwhelmed by the response from our local community here in Indonesia, a place that itself has many charitable needs.

With a population of 240 million people it is likely that there are more than 200 living with AHC in Indonesia. The number diagnosed? 1. Patrick. Our hope is that the work the CureAHC team is doing will one day impact children all over the world, including those in this country.
It is with great pleasure that we transfer the first donation of $3,400 USD to CureAHC. We look forward to contributing more in future.

Mrs.Sioe Ing raised nearly 3,000 dollars for CureAHC and her son Ian (left) worked with his school student council (OSIS) to continue raising money by selling cookies during break times.
